Team Training 2006

Training 2007 Overview

Ophea in partnership with the OPP and Kids Help Phone provided six English regional training sessions across the province beginning in March and completing in April 2007. One provincial French session was also held by video conference. The purpose of this Phase II Training was to build on Phase I Training and to offer an opportunity for increased school board, parent and local law enforcement participation. In addition these training events provided the opportunity to increase awareness and knowledge with respect to Internet safety among key community leaders and parents.

A team based training," train the trainer", approach was again used with the goal of creating a team of trainers or Internet safety champions within each school community. Building on the previous training these sessions increased familiarity and comfort with the material and technology. This Phase II training focused on the second resource, Air Dogs, while Phase I focused on the first resource Mirror Image. School board training teams consisted of school board personnel, parents and local law enforcement officers. In recognition of the shared responsibility of Internet Safety two enhancements were also included. Key community leaders as well as additional parent representatives from each school board/authority were invited to attend. This provided the opportunity for school board training teams, key community leaders and parent representatives from each school board/authority community to explore current and potential community support and partnerships. Phase II Training also included a third partner, Kids Help Phone, whose focus on bullying prevention supported and augmented these additional enhancements.

50 English school boards, 10 French school boards attended the training sessions. Participants included Directors of Education, Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Principals, Vice Principals, IT Consultants, IT teachers, teachers, Physical educators, safe school coordinators and learning coordinators and parent council chairs. Participants from law enforcement included chiefs of police, chief superintendents, community service officers, constables and youth services officers.

As part of the training, community teams were given the opportunity to, plan the implementation of the program in their school community or their Action Plan. As well, an opportunity was also provided to present these strategies to the larger group. These strategies are summarized below.

Action Plan Strategies

Presentations/Workshops. Deliver presentations/workshops to executive councils, administrators, principals, Grade 7 and 8 teachers, physical education teachers, teacher-librarians, literacy coaches and parents to increase awareness and knowledge of the issue and the supports available.

Collaborate with other school boards to share resources, police services, in-service for teachers and information posted on teacher website.

Involve parents. Create a "for the parents" website or host a parent night, "Come Hear What Your Kids Won't Tell You". Add Internet safety presentations to parent symposiums or parent nights.

Engage trustees. Educate them, present to them, host a trustee meeting.

Budget check. Plan program for next year to allow for the allocation of necessary resources.

Use Video conference technology to in-service teachers as a cost effective strategy.

Include in a Learning Conference (teacher conference) and engage local law enforcement officer and educators to present and promote the resources.

Newsletters. Produce newsletters to increase awareness and knowledge, distribute to parents, principals, and teachers.

Access Community Service Police officers to complement presentations and classroom implementation.

Pilot program followed by full implementation.

During the sessions an opportunity was also provided for school communities to discuss implementation challenges and solutions. These are highlighted below:

Challenge: Difficulty engaging parents.

Solutions:

  • Laptop privileges for students (ability to sign out laptops) only available to those students whose parents attend a "cyber-proofing" session
  • Host and advertise parent council sessions/workshops and community nights and provide snacks, dinner, daycare (senior students could assist) and other incentives
  • Host "lunch and learns" at parent worksites
  • Produce newsletters/parent letters
  • Host 2 nights a week workshop for parents – teach about what students are learning on internet
  • Withhold student password required for computer use until parent attends Internet safety session.
  • Host a community safety night with parents annually/monthly

Challenge: Students experiencing difficulty solving challenges

Solutions:

  • Have students work in groups
  • Encourage teachers to play game before presenting to students

Challenge: Making the game more accessible for all

Solutions:

  • Provide the script of the game online on the website.

Due to copyright the script cannot be posted to the Ophea site, however it will be posted towww.cybercops.net.
