Smokin’ Hot GRANTS
The High School Grant Program, funded through the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion, provides financial support for student-driven projects that promote social change and youth development through tobacco control initiatives. Students creatively identify ways to promote messages to their peers related to tobacco prevention and cessation, as well as tobacco industry denormalization. Projects perceived as successful are multi-faceted, interactive, engaging and mostly student led, and adult supported at the school and in the community. Past student campaigns have been smokin’ hot, taken to the wall, flavoured with lies, searching for non-smoking, non-chewing dates and lost underwear…
By the end of the workshop participants will..
better understand the high school grant program, who can apply, how to secure funding, and what type of activities have been most successful across Ontario and to understand the benefits of involvement to students and schools.

Healthy Kids – Healthy Futures: Inclusion of Children & Youth with Disabilities
March of Dimes Canada, in partnership with others, has been advocating for people with disabilities – children and youth included – with a vision of creating a society inclusive of people with disabilities. This session will examine the current state of physical activity for children and youth with physical disabilities, building awareness on how to better service these children and youth in light of two key milestones: • The release of “Reaching for the Top”, a report by Dr. Kellie Leitch, the Federal Minister of Health’s Special Advisor on Healthy Children and Youth and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). These two milestones will significantly impact educators, recreationists and public health officials and will demand modifications to the programs and services we provide and the facilities we provide them in. An open dialogue on ‘next steps’ will also be part of this workshop to provide delegates with some “food for thought” moving forward.
By the end of the workshop participants will..
leave with: • A renewed point of reference for thinking in more inclusive terms; • Tools to help modify their existing programs to be more inclusive; and, • An overview and common starting point to speak to their constituents and stakeholders on how to champion the physical activity and wellness of children & youth with disabilities within the educational/recreational environment.

FitSpirit - Born to Move!
FitSpirit’s goal is to motivate and inspire adolescent girls to become involved in sport! Why target teenage girls? Two reasons: Firstly, because recent studies show that Canadian teenage girls are suffering more and more from obesity, which means numerous increased health risks. This situation is directly linked to their low rate of physical activity, as well as a sedentary lifestyle. Secondly, the FitSpirit initiative was born from a group of high performance female athletes, including Olympians, who have an intense passion for sport. We are convinced that sport is an excellent tool for developing self-awareness and confidence. We want to be role models for young girls because not so long ago, we looked up to our own female role models for advice.

Drum FIT
Join us in this workout which incorporates drumming, fitness and creative exploration. Based on the exciting “Drums Alive” program, the components of fitness – cardiovascular, strength and co-ordination – are part of this successful drumming program. DrumFIT can easily be integrated into all classrooms and fitness centres helping children become more confident and successful learners. As well, the program is easily adaptable to special needs’ communities such as special education classrooms and seniors’ centres as well as many other adaptations. Join us and be prepared to Move It! Move It!

School Travel Planning
School Travel Planning addresses the issues of sustainability, safety and health associated with ‘the school run’ using a collaborative community-based approach. While the physical and attitudinal barriers to walking, cycling and other environmentally friendly modes of travel are addressed, all aspects of how children travel to and from school are investigated and documented. Key emphasis is placed on determining the extent to which a community allows for the independent mobility of children. Green Communities Canada, with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, is spearheading an exciting Canadian pilot test, which will be outlined in this session.
By the end of the workshop participants will..
create the momentum for implementing School Travel Planning in their community's schools.

Moving to Inclusion Online Resource
This session will provide an opportunity for participants to see the revised and updated Moving to Inclusion (MTI) resource – now available as an interactive, online learning tool. The MTI resource was originally developed by the Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability in collaboration with its partner organizations to help teachers include students with disabilities into their ongoing activity programs. The new online learning tool takes a broader view of physical activity settings, and in so doing, will assist coaches and community recreation leaders, as well as teachers, in providing inclusive physical activity opportunities.
By the end of the workshop participants will..
identify ways to modify activities for the purpose of including individuals with a disability.

Raise the Bar
Raise the Bar
This discussion - style presentation will focus on how we can build more inclusive physical activity programs in our schools. Through the development of intramural programs, we can empower more students to be physically active and enjoy sports. Through the development of a total health and physical education model - curriculum, intramurals, inter-school athletics - we can build programs that provide opportunities so that every student can achieve success and meet their physical activity goals.
By the end of the workshop participants will..
better understand the strategies and resources needed to develop and sustain intramural programs.
