Learn to Play Floorball Hockey

Floorball Hockey is an great alternative to traditional floor and ball hockey that is played in many Canadian schools. Floorball is a safer, faster and more skilled game that works at all schools - whether you have a strong hockey culture or no existing hockey programming at all. The game uses advanced, non-marking and durable equipment with rules derived from hockey and soccer. For example free hits, like free kicks, are awarded if there is hacking, slashing or lifting of sticks. Floorball is played in more than 150 Ontario schools. It is suitable for high schools or elementary schools and is the best way to bring hockey into your gym class.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to...
...organize a basic floorball game for their students. Participants will be introduced to the sport, the rules and given a chance to play. We will also present how you can start a floorball intramural program. This is especially valuable for schools where floorball is already a popular activity.

HIV: THE BASICS AND BEYOND

Sexual risk behavior and sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates indicate that the potential for HIV transmission among Canadian youth remains high. A Canadian study of youth ages 14-17 years found that 24% of those surveyed did not use a condom when they last had sex and 90% had misconceptions about the risks of STIs. The Aids Committee of London (ACOL), the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) and the Thames Valley District School Board collaborated on a pilot project offered initially to Grade 10 Health and Phsyical Education students titled HIV/AIDS: The Basics and Beyond. ACOL produced a one hour presentation covering the basics of HIV transmission, the continuum of risks, universal precautions and provided global and local statistics. MLHU produced a one hour presentation on STI’s, safer sex behaviours and the consequences of sexual decision making.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to...
Participants in the workshop will 1. Review recent Canadian statistics on HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections. 2. Receive two lesson plans (CD and reach and teach kit included) LESSON 1: HIV/AIDS The Basics 101 Activity on the “Truth about HIV” that will encourage youth to participate and be interactive. LESSON 2: HIV/AIDS – Beyond the Basics. STI's Choices and Consequences Yes/No/Maybe: an activity that utilizes scenarios and reach and teach kits to discuss safer sex behaviours. Condom Demonstration.

Swing IS Back And Jive Is Alive. Jive dance is a fun, highly energetic dance activity. It can be taught as a routine or the students can be given the freedom to create their own moves and routines after learning the basics. The lively music and the flare of the wraps, lifts, flips and throws captures and holds the students’ interest. If you teach your students that there are no wrong moves or mistakes, this will help to eliminate feelings of intimidation and apprehension and allow for creative fun. This dance fits under the active living movement skills and principals for grades 9-12.

Tchoukball

Tchoukball is a totally unique team sport that is great for all ages and levels of play. It’s originality extends from the diversity of demands it makes upon players; constant attention by all participants, anticipation and intelligence of all facets of the game are required, as is good athletic ability. At the heart of the game are simple throwing and catching skills. Physical contact and interceptions are not permitted, making mixed teaching a definite option. At any level, tchoukball emphasizes team spirit, seeing as fair play and respect for the opposition is a fundamental part of the way in which tchoukball is played. At a higher level tchoukball can be a very intense, extremely fast and skillful sport.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to...
understand and implement the game of tchoukball at any level.

Teaching Sending and Receiving Skills

We know that throwing and catching are foundation skills for participation in many life-long activities. We also know that adults who are active possess greater manipulation skills than their sedentary counterparts. In this workshop, a step by step progression using a wide variety of objects will be used to teach sending and receiving skills. Emphasis will be placed on the transferability of these skills to different sports. Delegates will recognise that they do not have to be ''experts'' in all sports in order to effectively teach sending and receiving skills.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to...
effectively teach and/or provide feedback for sending and receiving skills in a wide variety of sports.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu /BJJ is one of the best options for teaching students a form of self defence. The premise of Jiu-Jitsu is, joint and body manipulation through the use of leveraging. Students learn the basics and progress slowly to a more advanced technique. BJJ includes all components of fitness; cardio capacity, muscular capacity, flexibility, mental capability, balance, coordination, agility and more importantly promotes discipline and humility. Given the recent popularity of the UFC, our program is very popular and current. Warm-up, technique, supervised sparring, and cool down is the layout of class. Programs are 1 week and wrestling mats are necessary.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to...
have a sense of what the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers; a means to defend themselves in an intelligent manner by subduing and controlling their opponents, without panicking. Participants will then be shown options for dominating their opponents once they have been subdued through the use of position, leverage and one's own body weight. Finally, participants will be shown the final phase of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This is only necessary after you’ve given your opponent a chance to back off or as we like to say, ‘submit’. This workshop ties the entire philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu into one seamless application.

Paul Melia, True Sport

What Sport Can Do: The True Sport Report

A simple idea lies at the heart of the True Sport Movement - good sport can make a great difference. The importance of physical activity is underscored by Canada’s growing obesity rate. Canadians intuitively know that being active or playing sports reduces obesity but the current sport system prevents sport from realizing its potential as a public benefit for every child. When done right, sport has the ability to promote physical activity, positive youth development, and individual well-being. What Sport Can Do: The True Sport Report will help Canadians recognize the difference that good sport can make in their community.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to...
- See the tremendous power that good sport - values-driven sport - can offer in building a comprehensive, accessible and inclusive community sport system that delivers the sport Canadians want - true sport. - Understand the broad spectrum of benefits that good sport can offer including improving health and well-being; putting children and youth on a positive life course; building stronger and inclusive communites; as well as economic development and environmental sustainability. - Become a champion for ethical conduct and good sport in their community and within their sphere of influence.
