Activities

Ophea's Early Learning Resource is divided into 10 units, which include activities to help children develop physical and health literacy. These units are Introductory Activities and Cooperative Games; Kicking; Rolling and Bouncing; Throwing and Catching; Travelling; Jump, Land and Balance; Creative Movement; Personal Safety; Healthy Eating; and The Body and Hygiene.

The following elements are included on each activity card:

  • Curriculum Expectations: The codes for the specific expectations to be assessed are included on each activity card. Use these codes to reference the full expectations, examples, prompts and responses included in The Kindergarten Program. The activity learning goals on the activity cards are provided to illustrate the intended learning—the concepts that children should understand and the skills they are to acquire. They are not intended to illustrate the voice of the child. EL-K teams should display and share learning goals using child-friendly language.
  • Activity Learning Goals: Direct links to The Kindergarten Program expectations are outlined, along with the goals of child learning for each activity card. These goals can be shared with and clarified for children prior to beginning each activity card.
  • Facility: Possible locations for the instruction of the activity are listed. Suggestions for providing learning opportunities in the gymnasium, classroom or outdoors, as well as at specific learning centres, are included.
  • Equipment: Equipment and materials for each activity are listed.
  • Activity: Constitutes the main part of the activity. It provides instructions for setting up the activity area, using the equipment and materials, and organizing the children (e.g., formations, group size). It also incorporates a variety of teaching and learning strategies, including the integration of literacy strategies, to support the development of content-specific language.
  • Assessment Opportunity: Explanations are provided to assist the teacher with how to use assessment strategies and provide feedback on children’s learning. An anecdotal recording chart assessment tool is provided in the Appendices.
  • Notes to EL-K Team: Additional considerations specific to each activity card, such as preparation instructions, safety reminders and background information, are included to further support the Early Learning-Kindergarten team.
