Sample Safety Code of Behaviour for Outdoor Playground Structures

This section includes samples of playground structure rules that can be added to in order to reflect local school needs (e.g., no running, playing or riding trikes underneath the structure). Children are to be provided with your school’s rules with periodic reminders (e.g., in September, January and March, or as needed).

General Rules

  • Go on the playground structure only when a teacher/supervisor is present.
  • Listen to and follow instructions from the teacher/supervisor.
  • Do a visual check of the ground and of the playground structure before using it. Inform the teacher/supervisor if you see any of the following: a damaged ground cover; broken glass, animal feces or needles on the ground; skipping ropes, ropes or strings on the playground structure; a piece of the structure that is broken.
  • Do not use equipment during rainy, snowy or icy weather, when there is snow on the equipment or when it is wet.
  • Wear appropriate footwear. Bare feet, socks, and shoes with slippery soles are not permitted on the playground structure.
  • Do not wear jackets or hoods with loose drawstrings. Scarves, bicycle helmets and backpacks are not permitted.
  • Travel safely when near the playground structure. You must walk when on the structure.
  • Games of tag are not allowed near or on the structure.
  • Take turns.
  • Keep your hands to yourself at all times. Pushing and fighting are not permitted.
  • Keep your feet on the structure. Climbing the railings and sitting on parts of structure (e.g., steering wheels) are not permitted.
  • Eating is not permitted while on the playground structure.

Steps

  • Walk (do not run).
  • Hold the handrails.

Slides

  • Wait your turn. Keep your hands to yourself. Do not push or shove at the top of the slide.
  • The position for a safe slide is on your seat with legs in front. Do not slide head first, lying down or backward.
  • Check that no one is at the bottom of the slide before sliding down.
  • Once at the bottom of the slide, move away.
  • Do not walk or run up or down the slide bed.

Ladders

  • Wait your turn. Keep your hands to yourself. Do not push or shove at the ladder base or on the landing.
  • Hold onto the rung in front or onto railings when climbing the ladder.
  • Once at the top of the ladder, move away.

Platform

  • Walk at all times.
  • Do not jump from the platform to the ground. Use the steps, slides or ladders.
  • Keep your feet on the platform at all times. Do not attempt to climb onto the railings.

Pole

Keep two hands on the pole at all times. Always slide down the pole feet first.
