Ontario’s students, parents/caregivers, and staff have demonstrated their commitment to learning and resilience ever since the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Government of Ontario has now released a Guide to Reopening Ontario’s Schools for the 2020/2021 year, which includes a greater focus on social and emotional learning, hygiene and specific guidance around Health and Physical Education.
We believe physical activity and movement will be important when students return to school. We know that getting students moving supports their physical health, mental health, and their overall well-being.
Ophea provides the safety standards for any physical activity that occurs within Ontario’s education system through the Ontario Physical Activity Safety Standards in Education (OPASSE). For the reopening of schools we will continue to prioritize student safety and provide standards that will meet education's changing needs. Ophea is engaging education stakeholders to support an active, health and safe start to the school year and beyond.
Ophea is engaging in a process with key educational stakeholders including provincial subject and education system leadership associations, student associations, and school board Safety contacts. This approach is helping to identify emerging priorities and explore opportunities available to update/enhance existing resources to support educators with the planning and implementing of safe physical activities for students in September 2020, throughout the 2020-21 school year, and beyond.
