The purpose of this poster is to support teachers in modeling inquiry-based learning to assist students in developing their decision-making skills to make informed decisions about their personal health. The poster contains sample generic questions listed within each component of an inquiry process to help guide students' understanding of the process. This may be used to facilitate inquiry with various health topics (e.g., sexual health, personal safety and injury prevention). The diagram presents six components of inquiry-based learning in revolving circular left to right order. Within the centre of the diagram are six gears representing each component of inquiry-based learning. There is no clear “end” point to the process and inquiry-based learning is recursive.
Component one listed on the far left, “Formulate Questions”, includes:
What do I want to know more about to keep myself safe and stay healthy?
Component two, “Gather and Organize”, includes:
- What information do I need to answer my question?
- Where can I find it?
- How will I organize my information to help me answer my question?
Component three, “Interpret and Analyze”, includes:
- Does the information I have help me answer my question?
- Is my information from someone who knows about ways I can keep myself safe and healthy?
- Does it tell me different ways I can keep myself safe?
- Do I need to know anything else and where can I find more information?
Component four, “Evaluate and Draw Conclusions”, includes:
- Based on the information I have gathered, what is the best decision for me to keep myself safe and stay healthy?
- Why is it the right decision for me?
Component five, “Communicate”, includes:
- Who do I want to tell my decision to?
- What will I share?
- How will I share it?
- How I will be aware of other peoples’ choices and feelings?
Component six, “Reflect”, includes:
- How will I know if the decision I made was the right one to keep myself safe and healthy?
- Is there anything I might want to start doing or stop doing to care for my mental and physical health?
