Inquiry-Based Learning Model Poster (Specific) - Elementary

The purpose of this poster is to support teachers in modeling inquiry-based learning to assist students in developing their decision-making skills to make informed decisions about their personal health. The poster contains sample questions specific to transmission of germs/viruses and making personal choices as well as health behaviours to avoid transmitting or contracting germs/viruses. The diagram presents six components of inquiry-based learning in revolving circular left to right order. Within the centre of the diagram are six gears representing each component of inquiry-based learning. There is no clear “end” point to the process and inquiry-based learning is recursive.

Component one listed on the far left, “Formulate Questions”, includes:

What are some healthy practices I can take to help prevent the spread of infections and keep me and other people safe?

Component two, “Gather and Organize”, includes:

  • Where can I find reliable information about healthy practices that prevent the spread of infections? (e.g., my family, local public health, community elders, credible websites)?
  • How will I organize my information to compare the healthy practices?

Component three, “Interpret and Analyze”, includes:

  • Does my information tell me about healthy practices to prevent the spread of infections?
  • Is my information from someone who knows about healthy practices to prevent the spread of infections?
  • Do I have enough reliable information about healthy practices from different places or people, and reasons why they are healthy?
  • Do I need to find out about other practices to help me make my decision?

Component four, “Evaluate and Draw Conclusions”, includes:

  • Based on what I have learned, what are some healthy practices I can take to help prevent the spread of infections and keep me and other people safe?
  • Why are these the best practices for me?

Component five, “Communicate”, includes:

  • Who will I tell about the healthy practices I will take?
  • What do I want to share?
  • How will I share it?
  • How will I show that I respect the healthy practices others choose to prevent the spread of infections to care for their personal health?

Component six, “Reflect”, includes:

  • How will I know if the healthy practices I have chosen help prevent the spread of infections and keep me and other people safe?
  • What other steps can I take to care for my mental and physical health?
