Getting Started with Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy

A Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy (CRRP) approach in Health and Physical Education (H&PE) requires educators to take the time to do some personal thinking and reflection. It also requires educators to take the time to get to know their students and the identities they hold. Rather than assuming that the educator is the gatekeeper of all the knowledge, the educator is a collaborator who meets their students at their age and stage of their learning.

The purpose of this section is to provide educators with the opportunity to:

  • reflect on their own sensitivities and biases, and how they may influence their H&PE instruction, assessment, and evaluation approaches;
  • reflect on their H&PE program planning in the context of culture from a student-centred approach and to purposefully engage in reflective practice to work to support all students; and
  • build on their collaborative approaches with students and their colleagues, along with fostering healthy relationships in H&PE and the school community.
