This video may be used to initiate conversations about vaping with elementary students in Grades 4-5 as part of learning about Substance Use, Addictions and Related Behaviours. Engaging students in facilitated conversations based on the scenario and on-screen questions contained in the video will help students develop basic health knowledge related to vaping, and the social-emotional Learning skills needed to make informed decisions and take responsibility for their own health as they mature.
While viewing this scenario students learn about substances that may be found in vaping products, understand some of the reasons why individuals may choose to vape, and how to use their communication and decision-making skills to make a safer, more informed decision in situations involving vaping.
The Scenario
While setting up an interactive video game, 3 children discover a vape pen that has been left in the family room. They don’t know what it is and are not sure what they should do with it. After discussing their options, they decide to seek help from one of the child’s caregivers who answers their questions about vaping.

Before Viewing: Why do people choose to vape? What might influence someone to vape or not to vape? How do you make a safer, informed decision in situations involving vaping?
During Viewing: What do you know about vaping? What are some of the reasons adults might choose to vape? How is this different from a younger person’s choices to vape? What would you advise the characters to do in this situation and why?
