What Is It All About?
Students explore the concept of fundraising and determine a Healthy Schools initiative that will raise money for their school and/or community.
Why Do It?
Fundraisers are a great way to teach students about goal setting, working toward a common goal, saving, and practising how to work collaboratively with others.
Notes:
- Depending on the socio-economic background of your school community, this activity may not be appropriate for your class. Prior to starting this activity, determine whether a fundraiser is an appropriate activity.
- Ensure that you follow your board and/or school protocols and policies on fundraising.
How Do We Do It?
Lead a class discussion with the following guiding questions while documenting answers:
- Why do people organize fundraisers?
- What fundraisers have you seen before?
- Have you ever participated in a fundraiser? What was it raising money for?
- What would you want to organize a fundraiser for (e.g., help others, for a donation to a charity)?
- What are possible fundraising ideas that would support making our school a healthy school community (e.g., recess equipment, organize an event that invites the community into our school)?
- Who would be the target audience for our fundraiser (e.g., parents, students, community members)?
- When might be the best time to hold our fundraiser?
- What are ways we can advertise and promote our fundraiser around the school and/or community (e.g., daily announcements, posters around the school, school newsletter to families)?
What Else Do We Need?
- Chart Paper/Interactive Whiteboard
- Markers
How Do We Get Creative?
Develop fundraising collateral (e.g., flyers, posters, social media posts) that can be posted in the school and/or community to support your cause.
