PlaySport activities can be adapted for use in an intramural setting. There are multiple features on each activity card to support intramural facilitators in selecting activities to engage all participants in safe and meaningful play, including:
- Diverse activities that can be adapted for various group sizes and configurations (e.g., parallel and pairs play, small and large groups).
- Lists of the location options (e.g., outdoor and indoor spaces) to help facilitators determine if the activity can be used based on available space and equipment for intramurals.
- Suggestions to elevate participant voice and choice (e.g., choice of equipment, ways to send and receive, modifying rules for play and scoring system) are embedded within the “How to Play” section to maximize the fun, engagement, and inclusion of all participants.
- Lists of variations contained on each activity card provide intramural organizers and student leaders with ideas for customizing the activity based on participants’ interests, needs, and skill levels. Participants are also encouraged to create their own variations based on how they would like to play the game and to make activities more meaningful and relevant to their prior physical activity and lived experiences.
- The “Pause for Learning” section is a pedagogy relevant to a curricular setting where teachers pause the game and ask participants to focus on specific movement skills, concepts, and strategies related to that game. The sample questions may also be adapted for an intramural setting so that participants can reflect on cooperation and relationship building skills when playing with others, problem-solve for group/individual success, and select variations to include in the game to make it fun and inclusive for everyone while considering how to keep themselves and others safe during physical activity. The “Pause for Learning” section can be used to achieve the goals of an inclusive, engaging, and safe intramurals program for diverse participants.
